In almost every state, no. Filing the formation takes the name at the same moment. Alabama is the exception that requires a reservation first, and where a state does, it is included in our formation service rather than sold separately.
The state decides, commonly 60 to 120 days, and some allow one renewal. We tell you your state's term before you pay. In Texas, the reservation (Form 501, $40) lasts 120 days. Renew by filing a new application ($40) during the 30 days before it expires.
Only the right to register it in that state during the reservation. It is not a trademark and it does not stop anyone using the name in another state or as a brand.
